Charge two USB devices at the same time

image image

So you’re in a hotel room and there’s not enough plugs - do you choose between your PSP and your iPod or do you fumble in your bag for your new Sigma APO charger.
This device can charge two devices using USB connectors but from one AC plug.
There’s no price as yet, and the charger seems to be currently only available with a two-pin plug, but other versions for the rest of the world are sure to follow.

AMD launches first computer brand

imageAdvanced Micro Devices Inc (AMD.N: Quote, Profile, Research) on Sunday unveiled its first computer brand, aimed at small and medium-sized businesses, with design and sales help from its major chip customers such as Dell Inc.

AMD Business Class desktop personal computers will be followed by notebook PCs in the second half of this year.

AMD customers who plan to sell the computers include Acer (2353.TW: Quote, Profile, Research), Dell, Fujitsu-Siemens, Hewlett-Packard Co (HPQ.N: Quote, Profile, Research), and Lenovo (0992.HK: Quote, Profile, Research), said Hal Speed, a marketing architect for AMD based in Austin.

"It’s not like retail," he said. "People are buying this for work and we really tried to identify the nuggets (of technology for business desktop PCs) that weren’t being looked at."

The new product line is part of AMD’s efforts to regain its competitive edge against Intel Corp (INTC.O: Quote, Profile, Research) after a disastrous 2007. AMD has reported six consecutive quarters of net losses as Intel has regained much of the market share that it lost to AMD in 2005 and the first part of 2006.

NVIDIA quietly slips GeForce 9600 GSO entry graphics

image NVIDIA has opted for a low-key release today in its unveiling for the GeForce 9600 GSO, a new entry-to-mid range video chipset. The card uses the same single-slot design and chip features of the 9600 GT but scales down both clock speed and the memory path to trim the price. The GSO runs its core at 550MHz (down from 650MHz) and its 384MB of memory at an effective 1.6GHz (down from the 1.8GHz of the GT’s 512MB of memory). A 192-bit memory interface also shrinks the complexity of the chip from its 256-bit counterpart.

The estimated prices for the 9600 GSO haven’t been unveiled, but are likely to run significantly below the $169 of the 9600 GT for cards made by NVIDIA’s typical choices for third-party manufacturers. Reports have circulated that the GSO is a preemptive response to AMD’s anticipated ATI Radeon HD 3830, which itself should go on sale for between $119 and $129.

DXG-569V HD camcorder available for $169

While DXG has few aspirations to taste or quality, they sure know how to price this stuff. The new DXG-569V HD cam can shoot 1280 x 720 video at 30 fps, captures 5 megapixel stills and sports a 3-inch foldout LCD, all for the bargain basement price of $169. Naturally, that video quality probably won’t be putting RED ONE out of a job, and you’ll need to supply your own SD card to make the magic happen, but if that doesn’t dissuade you, you can swipe one from a Radio Shack shelf in silver or black as of today.

Planex network HDD shifts YouTube to iPods

imageJapanese electronics maker Planex today launched a pair of networked hard drives it says streamline loading web video on portable players. The DigiJuke 500GB and 1TB both include facilities to download clips from YouTube or similar Flash videos directly to the drive and convert them into "universal" video. Although the conversion software is built for Windows, clips are saved in MPEG-4 and will play properly on video-capable iPods as well as the PSP, PS3, and the Wii.

The DigiJukes also promise more OS-independent features with automatic servers to feed media to DLNA-based media hubs (such as the PS3) and iTunes content to Apple TVs or any Macs and PCs on the local network. A web-based interface also lets the drives operate even when no computers at home: a BitTorrent client and an FTP server let the storage queue up downloads of its own as well as give users access to their home content.
Both disks come with a gigabit Ethernet jack and an easily-accessible drive bay to swap out as newer storage comes into play. Planex ships the DigiJuke offerings on May 1st in Japan and is expected to sell them for the equivalent of $333 (500GB) and $524 (1TB). Planex hasn’t revealed international releases.

Nokia Introduces 6600 Slide with Accelerometer

imageimageToday Nokia introduced the 6600 Slide, a sleek looking handset that combines high fashion with high technology. The exterior of the 6600 Slide makes good use of metal, as it is covered with glossy steel and features an aluminum center button on the d-pad controller. Another unusual feature is the cellphone’s build-in accelerometer, which allows users to do things like activate the time on the display or silence inbound calls simply by tapping on the cellphone twice.

The main display on the 6600 Slide is a 2.2" QVGA resolution screen that supports up to 16 million color shades. The built-in 3.2 megapixel camera can capture large, VGA resolution video at 15 frames per second, or capture lower res QVGA footage at a movie-like 30 frames per second. Like most Nokia S40 powered devices, the 6600 Slide packs a built-in music player and Bluetooth support. While there is only 18MB of built-in storage available to users in the device, the 6600 Slide ships with a 512MB microSD memory card and supports cards as large as 4GB in size. And lastly, while this cellphone ships with Nokia Maps pre-installed, it requires an external Bluetooth GPS in order to make the most of it.

The 6600 Slide measures 93mm x 45mm x 14mm (3.7" x 1.8" x .6") in size and weighs a respectable 110g (3.9oz). Nokia claims that the 6600 Slide’s 1000mAh battery should be good for up to 4 hours of talk time or 14.5 days of standby time when used on 850 or 2100MHz UMTS networks, though we expect it to get more talk time when it is working on any of its 4 GSM/EDGE frequency bands. Nokia expects the 6600 Slide to be available for purchase in Q3 of this year for about 250EUR, before taxes and any carrier subsidies.
