Two milligrams of petrol - that’s how precise the High Precision Injection (HPI) controls the fuel-air mix. The dosage of the fuel injected is precisely ensured by the piezo injectors with only part of the combustion chamber being filled under lower partial loads. Thanks to the Twin Turbo, it is now possible for the straight six-cylinder engine to provide a supreme standard of power and performance previously only conceivable with far larger engines. Engine weight is also much lower, inter alia on account of the all-aluminium crankcase, which naturally benefits the agility of the entire car and offers more power on less fuel.

The 2009 BMW Z4 features two engine options. The sDrive30i comes equipped with a 3.0-liter I6 engine that produces 255 horsepower at 6,600 rpm and 220 pound-feet of torque at 2,600 rpm. The more powerful sDrive35i features a 3.0-liter I6 engine with twin turbochargers that generates 300 horsepower at 5,800 rpm and 300 pound-feet of torque at 1,400 to 5,000 rpm. While the sDrive30i is only available with either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission, the sDrive35i throws a Sport Auto seven-speed transmission into the mix. According to BMW, the sDrive30i can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 5.6 seconds, while the sDrive35i can do it in just 5.1 seconds. Both models have a top speed of 130 mph.

These cars are not designed for the everyday, perhaps this is why every BMW Z4 review focuses on the car’s extraordinary qualities. Indeed, the 2009 BMW Z4 pictures don’t lie - these cars are poetry in motion. From the ground up, the cars run on 17 x 8 Twin Spoke cast-alloy wheels and 225/45R-17 run-flat tires. They come standard with Dynamic Stability Control, including all-speed traction control, Dynamic Traction Control, electronic brake proportioning, antilock braking, Dynamic Brake Control, and cornering/avoidance stability enhancement. Perhaps most importantly, they are built upon a high-rigidity Roadster bodies with aluminum hoods.

Moving inside the car, we see an interior that almost exactly duplicates that of the CS Concept’s. In my opinion, this interior really focuses the dash and instruments much more toward the driver, which is thankfully the opposite of the direction BMW’s interiors had been moving. Granted it’s difficult to tell, but the fit and finish of interior appears to be very refined and polished and pulls design cues from the CS again with the electronic handbrake and the unfortunately goofy looking shifter on automatic/DCT models. That said, the Z4 will be a very comfortable, cozy place to be that wraps around it’s occupants juxtaposed to the somewhat expansive, long dash-laden interior of the previous Z4.

As the brand’s only two-seater, the Z4 carries the torch for BMW’s sports-car line, which traces back to the Z8, 507 TS, and 328 (the one from the ’30s, not the modern sedan). The Z’s new folding-hardtop roadster/coupe configuration allows for more freedom in design, and it is one of the harbingers of the BMW look for the next few years. Thankfully, the questionable styling cues of the previous Z4 have been refined into a more sophisticated and elegant form. With the me-too product strategies employed by the German luxury brands, BMW needs a strong competitor in this segment to demonstrate its ability to build a high-performance car that can match the best that Audi, Mercedes-Benz, and Porsche have to offer.
