GPS-equipped Car Camera Voyager Pro logs fender benders

Sure, these in-car crash loggers are a dime a dozen these days, but Brickhouse Security is pushing its Car Camera Voyager Pro as better than those ho hum alternatives thanks to the inclusion of GPS. As with most of its highly functional rivals, this one also packs a G-sensor that detects when a vehicle has been slammed into, bumped or otherwise rocked in an unorthodox manner; after that, it captures the 10 seconds immediately prior to and the 30 seconds immediately following the incident. Of course, you’ll also be able to pinpoint your exact location thanks to the corresponding GPS information, which could certainly help you out when hunting down CCTV footage of the nut-job who rammed your whip and wheeled off to Wendy’s as if nothing happened. Hand over $449.95 now and expect it to arrive later next week.

Dash Express gets big v2.1 June08 software update

imageThat first traffic update was only the beginning — Dash is announcing today its first proper software update to the Dash Express. Dubbed June08 (or v2.1), users now get three new trademarked names (among other things):

  • FasterFind - uses SiRFInstantFix for acquiring GPS during startup, so your Dash Express is aware of its location much faster than before.
  • MyRoute - your Dash Express learns your routes to common destinations and offers them up in comparison to its recommended routes (so you can see if your usual way really is faster).
  • Search Along Route - pretty much what it says. Allows you to find points of interest en route without gumming up your destinations. This seems like the most useful new feature, behind the faster acquisition time.
  • Road closure support - another self explanatory addition. If the Dash finds out a road is closed through Inrix or another means, it will completely black it out of your routes.
  • Performance and UI enhancements - We gave it a short test, and things really did seem a bit snappier and cleaner looking. Icons are better polished, arranged, and rendered, and simple stuff like navigating menus or switching between 2D and 3D views is quicker.

Still no way to quickly bypass the route selection screen (which is one of our bigger pet peeves), but as it’s populating you can now make your choice, which will save you a bit of extra time. It’s available for download via your Dash’s WiFi this morning, and is free for all users. Videos of MyRoute and Search Along Route at www.engadget.com

GLaDOS GPS voice pack

An enterprising nerd by the name of Ryan VanMiddlesworth is clearly a bigger Portal fan than you, since he’s cobbled together a GLaDOS-simulating voice pack for Garmin Nüvis. Just don’t try to prevent “GLaGPS” from constantly trying to divert you to cake-related points of interest, else you may find yourself tossing your Garmin into an incinerator.

Mio Moov 380 GPS Can Make Calls, Send Text Messages

Mio’s new Moov 380 GPS just passed through the FCC, complete with the ability to make/take phone calls and send/recieve SMS texts. The GPS unit comes with a SIM card slot, allowing for said cellular functions as well as an SD card slot for storage. In addition, the Moov 380 comes with a SIRFStarIII GPS chip and cellular data speeds would range between 2.75G and 3G.

Because this needs a full voice plan from a wireless carrier to make use of the Moov’s features, I’m assuming you’re supposed to use the SIM card from the cellphone you already have. But would you go through the trouble of SIM swapping for this? Also, we’ve seen cellular enabled GPS units from Dash and Magellan, and soon, Garmin with the Nuvifone, but the usefulness of such a connection depends on what data the devices can pull down from the network.

Exclusive: All BMW MY09 to receive built in navigation maps

In a surprising move, BMW has decided to get rid of the navigation disks in their iDrive system in all the 2009 models. The maps will be preloaded into the navigation systems and for the people picking up their car in Europe through the European Delivery program, they will have both European and U.S maps loaded.

Basically, when you pick up your car at the BMW Welt, you will have access to the European maps and as soon as your car gets to the VPC in the U.S, the BMW techs will switch it back to the U.S navigation map. So no need to carry a DVD around or borrowing it from someone else.

If for any reason you would like to receive any future map updates, you will have to take your car in at a BMW authorized dealer and for an extra charge, the maps will be updated.

We’re not sure what was the reason behind this decision, but as soon as we hear more information, we will let you know.
