IBM unveils water-cooled 3D chip prototype

IBM on Thursday announced plans to use water to cool its next-generation of computer chips internally, allowing it to develop faster multi-layer processors that don’t require additional external cooling. To this end, the company showed off a prototype 3D chip with thousands of tiny water passages in between the chip’s layers. The company says interlayer cooling was necessary, as traditional heat sinks weren’t efficient enough to cool today’s densely packaged processors. The water-carrying tubes are just 50 microns in diameter, and integrating them into the chip necessitated the development of a new thin-film soldering technique by IBM engineers.

To prevent electrical shorts, the passageways were hermetically sealed using a silicon wall and silicon oxide around each interconnect. At 10 microns, these seals required a fabrication accuracy that is 10 times more precise than for current chip interconnects.
The final chip sits in a silicon cooling container, with water pumped in through one side and out the other. While water-cooling computers is not a new concept, this is the first time it would be accomplished on such a miniature and large scale. According to IBM, the technology could find its way into consumer-level products within five years.

Pedal Powered Four Wheel Drive

Meet the Trailcart, the future of offroad adventure for the post peak oil generation. A series of lucky coincidences led Frank Fraune and his invention — a four wheel drive pedal powered vehicle called the Trailcart — to the Adventure and Offroad Convention in Bad Kissingen Germany. There, surrounded by gas-guzzling, large footprinted vehicles, two trailcart prototypes drew a curious crowd.

  Trailcart Inventor Frank Fraune

Trailcarts are being manufactured under the auspices of the AS Group which is better known for refurbishing gears and hydraulics and supplying related products, mainly to the paper industry. The Trailcart caught the eye of the bosses at AS Group when it was featured in a local newspaper. AS Group contacted Frank Fraune, and the rest is history.

But take this start-up seriously: the world champion in 24-hour mountainbiking is working with Trailcart, bringing knowledge and experience on two-wheelers to the development of the first pedal-powered four wheel drive offroad vehicle.

Cannon PC to offer CableCARDs in its HTPCs

Earlier this week, Cannon PC announced it will soon offer its Home- and Pro A/V-series HTPCs with dual and even quad CableCARDs installed. This allows them to record up to four individual standard- or high-def programs simultaneously, as each card will effectively act as a separate TV tuner, taking the place of a set-top box. Cannon PC took the opportunity to announce a direct OEM partnership with Microsoft as well, and all of the company’s HTPCs use Microsoft’s Windows Media Center as the multimedia interface.

The EX series pictured is just one of three PR A/V Series customizable HTPCs Cannon PC offers, and features a 12-inch HD touch-screen as the interface. Inside the case, room has been provided for 6TB of memory, with a 750GB Seagate Barracuda drive provided as standard equipment. Features common to all the company’s offerings are USB and FireWire connections, front inputs and outputs, 28-in-1 card readers, eight-channel HD audio support, and dual NTSC and HDTV tuners. The brains include Intel’s Quad or Dual core or Centrino processors, P35 Express chipsets, and ATI or NVIDIA graphics cards, with up to 8GB of RAM.
Prices for the EX series HTPC start at nearly $5,600, but do not include the dual CableCARDs, which will be available as options early in June via Cannon PC’s website.

Subaru Exiga All-new compact MPV promises seven-seat versatility and hot hath performance.

Japanese giant Subaru is about to get a whole lot more pulling power! This is the company’s new Exiga MPV, caught undergoing testing in California ahead of its unveiling in June.

And Auto Express can exclusively reveal that it could land in showrooms in the UK as early as 2009.

The barely disguised right-hand- drive model has a distinctive sleek profile, with bosses hoping it will appeal to buyers keen to blend sporty looks with people carrier space.

Trading on its rallying heritage, Subaru has also given the Exiga a large bonnet scoop – lifted straight from the Impreza STi – plus a rear spoiler and split twin tailpipes.

Inside, the newcomer is all about space, boasting enough room for seven adults. If the production Exiga stays faithful to the concept, unveiled at last year’s Tokyo Motor Show, it will also sport a panoramic glass roof, flat-panel TV monitors and fold-out tables. And we can confirm that the car will form part of a model line-up for 2009 which includes a new Legacy saloon and Outback estate.

The trio will be powered by newly developed 2.0 and 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engines, although the 3.0-litre unit in the current Subaru stable will be dropped.

The recently launched boxer diesel will be used as a blueprint for maximising the performance and efficiency of the petrol units. The result will be an output of 200bhp from the naturally aspirated 2.0 engine and more than 300bhp from the turbo 2.5-litre.

Subaru is also planning a turbocharged 3.7-litre petrol engine, with close to 450bhp, for a Legacy STi.
