NICE is the new SMART

imageimage  There is a fun and efficient NewCar hitting the British city streets very soon. It’s called “MyCar” and it can be YourCar for a mere $18,000 USD. Nice… that’s the name of the car company putting out this hip little all-electric city run about. Designed by legendary designers Giugiaro of Italdesign and made in Hong Kong. With an estimated 40 mile range (that’s 64 kilometers to everyone else) the MyCar by NICE will sport standard equipment that includes electric windows and mirrors, Radio/MP3 player, 14” Alloy wheels, remote central locking, Hi/lo and boost button and LCD multifunction display. It also has storage space under the hood, trunk and in the glove compartment. Options include a glass roof or removable fiberglass version, 15” Alloy wheels, leather interior, cooled and heated seats and a trunk rack. Buyers can opt for the work ‘n’ play and drive ‘n’ play options. The first incorporates a forward-folding passenger seat complete with laptop dock, the latter includes bluetooth, sat-nav and upgraded audio. Looks like SMART could take a lesson on being NICE.

British Steam Car plans for 170 MPH at Bonneville

The British Steam Car, a potential Land Speed Record breaker vehicle is being geared up for a trip across the Atlantic. It will head for the Bonneville Salt Flats and a potential tryst with racing history in late August. The car burns liquid petroleum gas at 750° F to pressurize that 360-hp Curtis turbine. This 25-ft.-long Steam Car can turn 10.5 gallons of water a minute into boiling-hot feat, with velocities in excess of 150 mph. The absolute land speed record of 763 mph, tops the 88-year-old international steam record of 127.66 mph. The target speed for later this summer: 170-mph. When the trials are run, it will be the first time the Steam Car will run as a complete unit. So far, all the car’s systems have been exercised individually on a test bed. The entire unit will run together for the first time in the third week of August, when the supersonic engineering team will test the time-bending machine prior to an attempt at the record the following week. The biggest problem thus far, has been the 12 micro boilers that have to make super heated steam, very quickly. Getting the maximum amount of energy from the burners into the water without allowing it to escape has been a difficult challenge. Unlike a steam locomotive, which uses a steam-powered injector system, the British Steam Car uses compressed-air-powered hydraulics to inject distilled water and pre-prime itself. The water is pumped into the start of 1.86 miles of tubing to develop three megawatts of heat to convert water into 750 F steam. This super-heated “dry” steam is then directed down the car via heavily lagged pipes and two enormous industrial steam valves, which act as throttles, and then into the two-stage turbine. “That’s where we turn pressure into velocity,” says Candy. The steam is injected into the turbine at over two times the speed of sound; under the assault, the turbine revolves at up to 13,000 rpm. The turbine drives the rear wheels via a conventional crown wheel and pinion. The vehicle turns 10.5 gallons of water a minute into super-heated steam at 40 times atmospheric pressure.

Vizio VP322 32-inch plasma eyes-on

We already told you about Vizio’s new cheap plasmas, but we recently had a chance to witness the 32-inch VP322 in person. The set’s case design is very tasteful, and a welcome departure from the flashy, uber-lit displays we’ve come to expect from Vizio. As for picture quality, the set exhibited the deep blacks one would expect from a plasma display, but the snowy feed of a basketball game — which we assume was coming form the set’s internal ATSC tuner — wasn’t good enough to tell how the VP322 scales and processes to its native 768 lines. The promised three HDMI and component inputs were all there, confirming that this TV is a decent choice for those making the digital transition. For $550 at Wal-Mart, though, we’re not about to complain.

T-Mobile Rocks Out with the Motorola ROKR E8

T-Mobile is about to announce that it will soon be offering the Motorola ROKR E8, a candybar handset announced earlier this year at the 2008 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Nevada. The ROKR E8 offers a special morphing touch sensitive keypad and navigation area, with buttons that change depending on the current situation. The keys also have some unique haptic feedback technology behind them that make them feel as if they are actually clicking when pressed.

With 2GB of internal storage and a microSD card slot for up to 4GB of further expansion, the ROKR E8 is capable of holding plenty of music, though you shouldn’t forget the 2 megapixel camera with video capture that’s also on board.

It appears that consumers will be able to pick one up for themselves on July 7th for $199 with a new contract.

Panasonic Atom-based tablet to launch this week

Panasonic’s Atom-based Toughbook mini tablet PC will be formally introduced this week, says one report. Although previewed multiple times, the computer should now be made official and will be the first known tablet to use the ultra-efficient, long battery life processor while also adding a rugged design. The 5.6-inch touchscreen is bordered by a shockproof rubber casing that covers ports that aren’t in use and keeps out dust and water.

Most specifications are still under guard, though the very small Toughbook will run Windows Vista and is likely to user a lower-clocked version of the Atom than the 1.6GHz chip found in mini notebooks, which have more space for cooling. One preview from Panasonic pointed to an actual launch in autumn, though whether this is for the company’s native Japan or for other countries wasn’t specified at the time.
