The Casio Exilim EX-Z1050 is a pocket sized digital camera. The fact that it has ten megapixels is likely to prove attractive to a lot of people. In other areas the Exilim EX-Z1050 is fairly typical of this type of camera both in terms of style and also features. It is relatively easy to use and has a simple design too. It has a three times zoom lens.

The Exilim EX-Z1050 comes with a decent bundle including the camera, battery, charger, USB/AV cables and a basic getting-started guide (14 pages in English). The software CD ROM includes Photo Loader with Hot Album ver. 3.1, Photo Transport ver. 1.0 and USB driver. A more in-depth User Guide is also on the disc (PDF). I prefer complete printed manuals since most people don’t carry their laptops around with them in order to read camera manuals. This is unfortunate since the camera has a number of good features that are buried in the menus

The LCD is slightly raised on a platform, as are the two buttons above it. The Playback and Recording mode buttons sit side by side above the right half of the LCD. A small LED sits to their left, indicating when the camera is busy reading or writing to the memory card. In the upper right corner of the Z1050’s back are eight tiny raised plastic bumps meant to keep the thumb from slipping. These actually work better than most and are actually a little sharp; they could definitely exfoliate your fingers so you have a smoother touch.

The EX-Z1050 sports a 2.6-inch, 115,000-pixel LCD screen. That’s a far cry from the 230,000-pixel screens found on a lot of cameras these days. The low resolution makes virtually everything you see through it look soft and grainy. Since the camera doesn’t have a viewfinder, you’re forced to deal with the disappointing LCD whenever you use it. This makes framing shots difficult, as the coarse, blurry display doesn’t clearly show whether the camera has accurately focused.

The Z1050’s general performance is quite impressive. It starts up very quickly in just over one second, and in high speed continuous shooting mode it can rattle off an impressively fast six frames a second, although this is restricted to 2MP (1600 x 1200). In normal speed mode it can shoot at about one frame a second at full resolution. It also has a three-shot burst mode using the flash on every shot, and a unique “zoom continuous” mode which takes a shot, but also saves a second version of it with 4x digital zoom applied. I guess it must have seemed like a good idea to someone…

The camera body feels solid and durable. The shutter release button provides enough tactile feedback so you’re aware of whether or not you’re fully depressing the button or pushing halfway to pre-focus. There is little shutter delay and auto focusing is fast under good lighting conditions. In low light., thanks to an orange low-light assist beam–it still finds focus pretty quickly.
