For the budget-conscious consumer who places an absolute premium on quality and performance, the Epson 6100 1080p projector delivers in spades. Not only does it set up quick and easy, offering an above-average image out of the gate, but with just a few simple tweaks by way of a fully-loaded user menu, you’ve got yourself an impeccable image that can rival some of the higher-priced projectors courtesy of bright, punchy visuals, a vast color gamut, superb contrast, and deep, dark blacks.

The new PowerLite Home Cinema 6100 falls in the middle of the line price-wise. This $1,999 3LCD projector is the least expensive 1080p model in Epson’s roster, yet it boasts some specs that are better than those of the model it’s intended to replace: the Home Cinema 1080, which I happen to own. The 6100 has a rated 1,800 lumens of light output in its high lamp mode and a quoted 18,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, compared with 1,200 lumens and 12,000:1 for the Home Cinema 1080. It adds a second HDMI input (HDMI 1.3a), as well as a new auto iris, more picture adjustments and a more efficient 200-watt E-TORL lamp with a listed 4,000-hour life.

The key advantage of the 6100 over either of the Sanyo models is high lumen output. If you have a lot of ambient light in the room, the 6100’s high brightness mode will give you a picture with more sizzle than either the Z700 or Z3000 can deliver. For ambient light situations, the Home Cinema 6100 would be our clear recommendation. A secondary advantage is the 6100’s stated 4000 hour lamp life. Sanyo does not publish anticipated lamp life as a spec on any of its projectors, but you can safely assume you won’t get more than 2000 hours out of it.

A significantly improved airflow system in the Home Cinema 6100 contributes to more efficient use of power, reduced cool-down periods and lower fan speeds that result in quieter operation (only 22 db) than earlier models. The airflow system also takes advantage of an advanced air filtration system that achieves up to 98 percent efficiency which contributes to longer filter life.
