The iAudio 7 continues a long line of Cowon’s iAudio series of media players. And this is the best one yet. If you are familiar with the iAudio line, you might know that the previous version of the player was the first player equipped with a .85” 4gb hard drive. However, with the iAudio 7, the hard drive is now replaced with flash memory. This eliminates one of the main complaints users had with the iAudio 6, which was the slow load time. The media now plays instantly thanks to the flash memory.

Two touch-sensitive function buttons sit on the front too, and after playing with this interface we can’t help feeling the volume, power and menu buttons on the top of the player are a tad boring. Still, as buttons go, they don’t disappoint. There’s also a pair of 3.5mm sockets on one end: one for headphones and one for line-in sources.

The 262K Color 1.3” 160 x 128 pixel LCD screen is an improvement over the previous OLED screen on the i6. The colors on the i7’s LCD show more accurately than the i6’s OLED screen and do not have a blue-ish tint when displaying video and photos. Even when the screen is off, this blue tint is visible when comparing. An additional benefit of the upgraded LCD screen is that there is no screen flicker which is commonly seen on OLED screens. Don’t get me wrong, the screen looked great on the i6, but the improved difference in the i7 is evident when compared side by side.

Access to all these functions is via what is possibly the most comprehensive and detailed menu system you’re ever likely to see on a flash-based MP3 player. This iAudio 7, among other things, allows you customise buttons, switch between MTP and UMS (universal mass storage) modes without have to flash the firmware, and choose between file-and-folder browsing or browse by tag (artist, album, genre and so on).
