Professional performance

The new look, which Acer calls its ProFile design, is less extravagant. It feels durable and, according to Acer, the Acer TravelMate 6292’s magnesium alloy cover makes it 20 times stronger. Even though well-built, the lid lacks clasps and so is prone to opening easily.
Despite this niggle, we reckon Acer has got it spot on with the size and weight of the Acer TravelMate 6292 as it could be easily carried – making it ideal for the business professional.

Using the synthetic benchmark PCmark05 we witnessed very good performance for such a small notebook, with an overall score of 4,037. This includes a whopping 5,108 in the CPU section and 4,238 in the memory section of the benchmark - that’s 13 and 12 per cent faster than the Zepto Znote we recently reviewed.
This new T7300 2GHz chip beats the two closest 667MHz FSB models (the 2GHz T7200 and the 2.13GHz T7400) by 5-7 per cent in terms of memory performance. Rather unsurprisingly, the T7200 achieved exactly the same CPU score, while the T7400 has a six per cent lead over the T7300 in this section.

The 6292 sports Intel’s latest ‘Santa Rosa’ Centrino Dup spec, which means you get a Core 2 Duo T7300 running at 2GHz, Intel GMA X3100 integrated graphics and 802.11n Wi-Fi. There’s a healthy 2GB of DDR 2 memory thrown in and there’s oodles of storage space on the 160GB hard drive. Acer has also included an internal 8x multi-format DVD writer, so you don’t need to mess around with external units - another sign the 6292 isn’t as ultra-portable as Acer might like us to think.

The TravelMate 6292’s chassis is large enough to accommodate an optical drive, in the shape of an 8X DVD-Super Multi double-layer drive on the right-hand side. In front of this is a flash card reader that supports SD, MMC, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO and xD media. Towards the back of the right-had edge are two USB 2.0 ports and the modem (RJ-11) connector.

The Acer 6292 comes with a 4200 mAH six cell battery. Our battery test was conducted under the moderate performance setting which was applied through the ‘e’ management console. The battery lasted for 2 hours and 13 minutes. Under the low performance setting, the battery lasted for 2 hours and 49 minutes. Battery life in general terms is above average but since it’s the first laptop based on the new platform, conclusions can only be made once we test laptops from other manufacturers based on the same form factor and using the Santa Rosa platform.
