The Area-51 ALX enables gaming performance beyond the combined capabilities of CPUs and GPUs by integrating a third element vital to realistic gameplay: the highly innovative AGEIA PhysXâ„¢, the first-ever physics processing unit. The PhysX adds a level of dynamic motion and interaction never before experienced in gaming by accelerating the scale and quality of real-time physics. With PhysX, visual effects such as how fluids flow and how explosions scatter debris are portrayed much more realistically to greatly enhance gameplay on PhysX-enabled games.

Opening the eye-catching Alienware case—shiny black with chrome fins, suggesting how Chevrolet might have designed the ultimate in intergalactic luxury circa 1957—further reminds you how seriously Alienware takes its PC-enthusiast customers’ convenience and comfort. The case conceals a compact liquid-cooling system, acoustic dampening for reducing noise levels, lots of space for adding and removing components, a sideways hard drive mounting scheme (adding or removing drives is very easy), and clean cable arrangements. It’s also outfitted with two open 5.25-inch drive bays and a 1,000-watt power supply for accommodating anything else you might need that Alienware didn’t provide.

The biggest surprise with the Area-51 ALX is probably the limited selection for some of the components. Sure, its great that it has two GeForce 8800 GTX cards, but what about an offering that comes with just a single card as a way to reduce the costs for the system? Or what about offering the new Quad Core 2 Extreme QX6800 or dual core X6800 processor that actually has a slight advantage in gaming over the quad core that comes in the system?

Physically, the case uses Alienware’s current P2 chassis design. It looks like an alien head from the front, or sort of like a retro ’50s car grill on the sides. Think of it as William Joyce meets H.R. Giger, and you wouldn’t be far off. It’s also supposed to have a bunch of custom lighting zones through a feature called AlienFX: Windows software is supposed to let you pick custom colors for six different areas. All the lights were out on our system, and the Windows software simply gave us an error and suggested we try rebooting (which didn’t help). Busted AlienFX system aside, the case is kind of love-it-or-don’t affair, but it certainly is distinctive.

The Extreme Edition and GeForce 6800 Ultra parts already run very hot at their standard settings; overclock them, and you’ll need to get creative with thermal control. Enter the ALX liquid-cooling system. Two pumps and a heat-exchange unit channel a water/alcohol solution through plastic tubes to specially designed heat sink covers on the processor, the video card’s GPU, and throughout the motherboard. The cooling system also features dual fans with three speed selections and a monitoring mechanism that sounds an alarm and shuts down the system in the event of an overheating condition, typically in excess of 136 degrees F. Our temperature readings ranged between 95 and 100 degrees F. Cranking the fan speed up to its highest setting produced some background noise, but we found the Area-51 ALX fairly quiet and cool when the fans ran at lower speeds.
