Fujitsu 15.4-inch, WXGA notebook in its LifeBook A-series, the configurable A1110. Supposedly the main draw of this model is its interchangeable cover, although with only three varieties currently available — priced at $20 apiece (only one ships with the device) — the configurability seems to be less than Fujitsu would like the consumer to believe. Still, even the $800, 6.3-pound base model offers several top-notch features, including a 2.0GHz T5800 Core 2 Duo processor, 3GB of RAM, and a dual-layer DVD burner, along with a 250GB hard drive (only 5,400 RPM), three USB ports, and an ExpressCard slot. The only other member of the A-series, the LifeBook A6210, features the same screen but a faster processor, integrated Bluetooth, and several additional inputs such as a multi-card reader.

Features

  • Intel Core 2 Duo processor (P7350 or P5800)
  • 3GB/4GB RAM
  • 250GB/320GB hard drive
  • 802.11n Wi-Fi connectivity
  • Built-in webcam
  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • Three USB 2.0 ports
  • SD memory card slot
  • ExpressCard slot
  • Spill-proof keyboard
  • 15.4″ display at 1,366 x 768 resolution

Competing in the budget laptop market is hard, what with the cut-throat competition from giants like Dell and HP and the countless low-priced models being offered. Amid this struggle, Fujitsu was faced with a particular challenge with its LifeBook A1110 ($799 direct): How to add value to this clunker without driving its price up? The company chose to hide its boring design (and maybe disguise some of that heft) by offering the A1110 with any of three interchangeable snap-on lids—colorful, bold-looking faceplates that will either impress or scare you away. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to make the LifeBook stand out among its peers.

The built-in camera is a great way to stay in touch with business associates. The handy, versatile 1.3 megapixel camera and its easy-to-use software let you take still pictures or capture video. You need to illustrate a complicated procedure to a colleague in another state? No problem. You have a prototype you want to photograph? It’s a snap. You want to practice that important speech and be able to review it? Use the video capture function to make a recording of it. Uses for the built-in camera are limited only by your imagination. The camera is located just above the display in the center.

Apart from the new above details, the A1110 can be made to order with a choice of two 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo chips, the P7350 or P5800, set into the Centrino 2 mobile platform. The basic version gets 3GB of RAM and a 250GB hard disk drive, while opting for higher-end versions brings 4GB of RAM and a 320GB HDD. Operating system options include either 32- or 64-bit Windows Vista Home Premium.

"With existing color notebooks, you’re stuck with that color for the life of the notebook. Swappable Fujitsu covers allow you to not only express yourself, but to change the expression. Like a chameleon, you tailor your computer color to your environment. Fujitsu is the first to offer covers you can change, and has engineered the lids so they easily snap on and snap off the LCD cover. With PCs now being a personal expression of the individual, and in many instances a fashion accessory, accessorizing the PC was a logical step."
