The latest HDX18 desktop replacement not only offers a larger screen estate compared with previous 17-inch laptops, it also provides a 16:9 aspect ratio viewing experience. This allows widescreen movies to be displayed sans black borders, which appeared in previous 16:10 17-inch LCDs. Like its rivals, the HDX18 is billed as an entertainment portable. Let’s see if it has what it takes to play in the big league.

A 20-inch laptop might sound like the ultimate media hub, and for a while, the HP Pavilion HDX-9000 (Dragon) received numerous accolades for being most extraordinary, biggest in the world, and straight out of "Ripley’s Believe or Not." Unfortunately, it was too big and costly to really take off. A new wave of screen sizes is surfacing, though, and HP is ready to capitalize. The HP HDX18t ($2,000 direct) tips the scales at just 8.7 pounds (rather than the HDX-9000’s absurd 15 pounds), and follows an ongoing parade of laptops utilizing the 16:9 screen format. Overall, this cinematic wonder excels in terms of its features and performance, which earn it an Editors’ Choice.

The HDX18 shares several design elements with the rest of the updated HP Pavilion line, but more than size and weight separate the HDX18 from its smaller siblings. First, HP the new 16:9 ratio display means you have more real-estate for text on websites, for multiple documents on the screen at the same time, or for a more "full-screen" view of HD movies that have been filmed in 16:9 format. The glossy metallic gray and silver "Imprint" finish looks fantastic. While we didn’t test the high-impact finish on our pre-production unit by dropping it repeatedly in our office, I can say the finish looks quite durable … though fingerprints show up quickly on the glossy finish.

The HDX18 has dual hard-drives, giving up to a combined 640GB of storage, while the HDX16 has up to 320GB; both laptops use HP’s Protect Smart 3D accelerometer system to monitor for drops or bumps and automatically park the drive heads.  Dual headphone sockets are standard, there’s also a “chat-tuned” webcam for which HP purposefully specified a VGA sensor (rather than, say, a 1.3-megapixel one) capable of improved low-light performance and 24fps.  Ports include a dual-purpose USB/eSATA, HDMI and Firewire, while the touchpad also has an on-off button for use with an external mouse.
