ThinkPad laptops generally have excellent keyboards. The N100 isn’t a ThinkPad, and it doesn’t have a ThinkPad keyboard, but what it does have is pretty good. The keyboard is a bit more cramped than those on comparable systems, such as the Pavilion dv5100, but the keys are firm, wide and very comfortable to type on. The touch pad is a bit small, though, and the touch-pad buttons don’t give as much as we’d like; alas, it lacks the ThinkPad’s red, eraser-head pointing stick. Above the keyboard are three handy external volume controls — the extent of the N100’s dedicated multimedia controls — and a fourth button, which summons Lenovo’s useful system-management and help utility.

Hard drive performance is also quite strong for the 3000 N100 system. It comes with a large 80GB model that uses the faster 5400rpm spin rate. While the hard drive storage is quite good, they chose not to include a DVD burner with the system. Instead it uses a 24x CD-RW/DVD combo drive that allows users to record music or data CDs or playback DVD movies.

You’ll also find a fingerprint scanner on the device. There is an excellent wizard that guides you through using this when you first boot up the machine, making sure your computer is password protected. Upon using the right fingerprint, it basically takes this password out of storage and logs in for you. If you wanted to, if you perhaps lost your fingers, or wanted to give someone access over the phone, you can access the machine using just your password. This is quite cool as you can just run your finger across the machine to log in, but I’ve survived the last few years typing passwords in, so I’m sure I could last a few more.

The manufacturer designed this model for small business. According to the dug up information, the N series is a reliable (IBM reputation) and high-performance notebook for small business professionals. I repeat, this notebook is designed for business usage. At the same time, the manufacturer stresses that it’s a multimedia model: "Stereo speakers on both sides of the keyboard should generate more powerful sound and enlarge the audibility zone". This "multimedia" feature (why include it into a business model?) also manifests itself in a glossy widescreen panel, Lenovo care tools, and some additional software "necessary for your business". We’ll see what the manufacturer meant.
