The Simpsons Game is a video game based on the animated television series The Simpsons, made for the Wii, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, Nintendo DS and PSP. Each version has an exclusive cover art. It is a third-person action game featuring an original storyline written by Tim Long, Matt Selman and Matt Warburton. The plot is self referential in nature, with the family discovering that they are forced to participate in another Simpsons video game. Similar to the show, the game pokes fun at popular culture, other video games and EA, its publisher.

The game begins with the release of a video game that Bart is seemingly very excited with, Grand Theft Scratchy. However, the powers that be (namely Marge) tries to get game banned for minors. The Simpson family then actually discover that they are inside of a video game themselves, and thus capable of utilizing super abilities for their personal gains. However, this soon doesn’t matter, as aliens begin to attack Springfield, and the family becomes responsible for saving the world themselves.

The Simpsons take on the game industry at large in The Simpsons Game. The premise for The Simpsons Game is appropriately meta, given the circumstances. One day, Bart happens upon a manual for a game called The Simpsons Game, which has floated down from out of the sky. He learns that this game gives him and his family members special powers then promptly sets off to cause as much violence as possible. At the same time, a game called Grand Theft Scratchy has just been released in stores and Bart wants a copy, much to Marge’s chagrin.

The game follows the adventures of each member of the Simpson clan (well, aside from Maggie and Grampa) as they attempt to harness the special “video game” powers that are bestowed on them when Bart finds a manual that’s fallen from the heavens. The family gradually realizes that they are actually characters inside a video game, then decide to try to find their maker (no, it’s not God). Along the way, they’ll meet up with dozens upon dozens of familiar faces, each of which can be interacted with. They’ll also explore a bunch of locales ripped directly from the show itself. In many ways, this is the most comprehensive Simpsons game yet, as you’ll get to escape from Springfield to explore the greater Simpsons universe.

The audio also impresses. The soundtrack is exclusive to the game but the wacky tunes (jazz music in the Japan level) are right in line with what you would expect from the TV show. The voice acting is superb thanks to the fact that EA managed to get all of the voice cast from the TV show. The dialogue is sharp, witty and funny and delivered with the same enthusiasm that you would hear on the TV show.
