SDK released ahead of competition from Apple’s rumoured tablet
Amazon Announces Kindle Apps

In an interesting move from Amazon, the etailer has announced it is to release a software development kit that will see apps developed for the Kindle platform.

Among the suggestions from Amazon for what the Kindle apps might materialise as are cookbook add-ons that can suggest recipes based on input criteria, travel book-related apps suggesting activities as well as word games and puzzles.

“We’ve heard from lots of developers over the past two years who are excited to build on top of Kindle”, said Ian Freed, VP of Amazon Kindle in the press release.

“The Kindle Development Kit opens many possibilities – we look forward to being surprised by what developers invent”.

Handmark is confirmed as building an active Zagat guide, Sonic Boom is building word games and puzzles and EA has said it plans to get involved on the gaming side too.

The Kindle Development Kit includes sample code, documentation, and the Kindle Simulator, which helps developers build and test their content by simulating the 6-inch Kindle and 9.7-inch Kindle DX on Mac, PC, and Linux desktops.

There’s more info over on http://www.amazon.com/kdk/ where you can sign up to be notified when the limited beta starts next month and those not in on the first wave of access will get “wait-listed”.

We will keep you posted on Kindle apps news, but in the meantime, let us know your thoughts on the news – or what apps you might like to see – in the comments box below.

Equipped with Windows 7 Professional
Toshiba Announces Satellite Pro U500, L550 and L500 0

Toshiba, hot on the heels of announcing a couple of consumer laptops, has added some business machines to its Satellite portfolio. There’s the U500, L550 and L500. All three feature, Toshiba says, “everyday computing efficiency with impressive multimedia power”.

All three also have multi-touch trackpads, Toshiba’s power management software, and an application suite called “Toshiba Lifespace” that includes a heap of business productivity tools. Windows 7 Professional is included on each machine, too.

The Satellite Pro U500 is the smallest of the bunch, featuring a 13.3-inch display and integrated Intel graphics. It had a DVD rewriter, b/g/n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. There’s an impact sensor that protects the hard disk, which comes in capacities up to 400GB. Up to 4GB of RAM is supplied, and the press release issued didn’t specify a processor but we’d imagine it’ll be one of the ULV Intel chips.

The Satellite Pro L500 is bigger, featuring a 15.6-inch display, Core 2 Duo processor, integrated graphics, and 4GB of RAM. There’s hard disks up to 400GB, and b/g/n Wi-Fi as well as HDMI-out and eSATA support on one of the three USB ports.

Lastly, the Satellite Pro L550 has a whopping 17.3-inch display with LED backlighting, a Core 2 Duo processor, 4GB of RAM, ATI Mobility Radeon HD discrete graphics card, b/g/n Wi-Fi, HDMI, eSATA, and again – hard drives with capacities going up to 400GB. It comes with a 4-in-1 card reader, too.

The U500 costs ?570, the L500 is ?470 and the L550 costs ?730. Those are just minimums, though – if you start to increase the specs then the price will go up alongside. All will be available in “Late October”, so very shortly.

Monitor/TV hybrid series
Asus announces T1 screens 0

Asus has announced a new set of screens that it’s calling the T1 series. It’s a monitor/television hybrid, meaning that it has the capability of displaying both computer signals as well as television ones. Of course, most televisions can do that already, but let’s not rain on Asus’s parade.

From the TV angle, it has a set of display modes that’ll you’ll be familiar with – Game, Night view, Scenery and Standard – and a pair of integrated 7W speakers with four audio presets – Vocal, Rock, Soft, and the wonderfully titled “Boom”.

It has a 20,000:1 contrast ratio, 1080p support, 2 HDMI ports, and a “vast array” of other connection options. It comes in 22-inch, 24-inch and 27-inch sizes, and has an integrated TV-tuner that can get both digital and analogue signals.

We’re told pricing is “approx ?279″, but it’s not clear which size screen that applies to. On the bright side, though, they’re available now.
