It makes it feel like you’re in the middle of Tron , but GM’s new heads-up display’s not just a way to play out childhood fantasies. The system projects laser-generated images onto windshields, providing a great looking enhanced vision display. More??

Christmas isn’t coming early, but at least you’re getting a heads up. GM car dealers got their annual model guide, and what has our interests piqued here is the listing for the 2011 Chevrolet Volt, the plug-in hybrid electric car that seems to make our heart race in equal proportions to our wallets crying. According to the chart, the company will be accepting orders starting in September, with the official production date (or “Job 1 date” in automotive lingo) starting November 1st. There’s a bit of a discrepancy, however, as the dealers won’t know their final allocation until two weeks after the startup time — notice how it’s typically done weeks before with the other models — but hey, maybe time paradoxes is just another bullet point on its list of features. It’s about time Doc’s DeLorean had some competition.

Frustrated after seeing his father try to make a replacement car key without the ID code, Steve Randall and Ted Schwarzkopf created the Electronic Key Impressioner. If it works, it could be great news for locksmiths. And maybe thieves too.
The Electronic Key Impressioner plugs into the car keyhole and, after aligning it properly, it connects with a computer via USB, sucking up the code after you select the car type you are trying to crack. For now, it only work for Fords.
The key cloner will only be sold to authorized locksmiths. Randall says that their device will have to connect to the Internet to work, so if it falls into the wrong hands, it could be deactivated remotely. Sadly, if history has told us anything, is that no matter how secure you think your system is, there will always be people capable of cracking it. [Popular Mechanics]

Uh oh. Steve Woz is having some “very scary” trouble with his 2010 Toyota Prius. At a recent event in San Francisco he went off topic and talked about how faulty software is to blame for his car’s accelerator troubles:
Toyota has this accelerator problem we’ve all heard about. Well, I have many models of Prius that got recalled, but I have a new model that didn’t get recalled. This new model has an accelerator that goes wild but only under certain conditions of cruise control. And I can repeat it over and over and over again—safely. This is software. It’s not a bad accelerator pedal. It’s very scary, but luckily for me I can hit the brakes.
Toyota’s reponse? They’re looking into it:
We’re in the business of investigating complaints, assessing problems and finding remedies. After many years of exhaustive testing we have not found any evidence of an electronic [software] problem that would have led to unwanted acceleration.
I hope things get figured out soon, otherwise Woz might have to switch to a Segway as his main mode of transportation. [CNET via Jalopnik]

OKI Electric Cable and Japan Aviation Electronics Industry Limited have combined their expertise in “large-diameter H-PCF* optical fiber and Type PN connectors for factory automation (FA) and railway cars” to create industry’s first hybrid product: optical fiber cable with built-in connector. Usually there is a need to set up two separate systems, one for fiber optic and the other for power supply. However, from now, customers will have space- and pocket-friendly solution with this two-in-one product. According to the developers, this new product is expected to be especially welcome to be used as monitors for automotive industry and monitoring cameras.
Before it will be available in worldwide markets from April 2010, it is announced to be exhibited at OKI Electric Cable’s booth Nr.89 at ITE 2009(International Technical Exhibition on Image Technology and Equipment) which will be held in Yokohama from December 2-4.
Large-diameter H-PCF: H-PCF (Hard Plastic Clad Fiber) is an optical fiber. It uses fluorocarbon polymers with minimal bending for the clad part and quartz glass for the core part. Compared with silica-based optical fiber (SM optical fiber, GI optical fiber), it has high connectivity with the light receptor part since its core diameter can be as large as 200??, enabling low-cost and simplified system development.
Type PN connector: This is a two-core fiber connector regulated under the IEC61754-16. It is commonly used for bi-transmission for PCF or POF (plastic optical fiber) connectors.

You may have heard about that magic ‘self-healing paint’ (a.k.a Scratch Shield Paint). This praiseworthy product of the collaboration among Nissan, University of Tokyo and Advanced Softmaterials Inc. is licensed to NTT Docomo for use in its mobile phones for Japanese market.
NISSAN’S AMAZING “SCRATCH SHIELD” PAINT TO BE APPLIED TO MOBILE PHONES
- NTT DoCoMo to license “Scratch Shield” paint technology in Japan -
YOKOHAMA (November 10, 2009)–Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., today announced it will license its breakthrough “Scratch Shield” paint to NTT DoCoMo, Inc. for mobile phone application in Japan. The self-healing paint, currently applied to certain Nissan and Infiniti vehicles worldwide, was developed in collaboration with University of Tokyo and Advanced Softmaterials Inc.
The Scratch Shield, a world first in paint technology, was commercially introduced in December, 2005. The Scratch Shield paint self-heals fine scratches and is capable of restoring the vehicles’s paint surfaces overnight or up to a week’s time in more severe cases. The Scratch Shield paint is also more scratch-resistant than conventional paint, therefore, contributing to a more durable and long-lasting paint coat.
This unique self-heal quality of the paint is ideal for mobile phone application, which is susceptible to scratches over daily use. NTT DoCoMo, Inc. will license the Scratch Shield for its mobile phones to be introduced in Japan, which will be a value-add feature for customers.
Nissan has been licensing its unique technologies for various non-automotive applications since 2004. Other technologies that have been licensed include the around-view monitor and far infrared image sensor. Nissan will continue to research and develop breakthrough technologies that can benefit other industries, and promote these non-automotive applications globally.…

Includes IQ Routes and advanced lane guidance
TomTom and Renault have issued an update for their Carminat partnership which comes embedded in certain small and medium cars and offers Satnav functionality to drivers of those vehicles.
The update brings IQ Routes technology, which plans the fastest route for a given destination using the driving history of millions of users, and advanced lane guidance, which offers help for motorists who get stuck on difficult and unfamiliar junctions where they have to cross multiple lanes.
The update comes on SD cards that contain maps. If you’re a Carminat user, you’ll get it when you buy your next map or activate your latest map guarantee, which allows you to get the latest map for free within 60 days after you first use their device.
“Now users of Carminat TomTom can have smarter and safer routing by easily downloading the features themselves – a first in the automotive industry”, said Giles Shrimpton, TomTom’s MD automotive. “This is an important milestone in our ongoing drive to help the automotive industry meet the needs of its customers”.
