BMW’s Mini brand is getting a little bigger soon, with the Countryman bringing a taller stance and some AWD to the party, but that won’t be the only exciting addition to the mix. The Countryman will be the first Mini to offer Mini Connected, an infotainment system of the likes of Sync or MyFord. This one naturally features iPhone/iPod integration and all that jazz, but most interesting is the so-called “web radio function” that will allow internet radio streams to be beamed right into the car. Stations must be selected from an “extensive” database, so it remains to be seen whether your favorite speed metal stream will be included, but more importantly Mini isn’t saying just how those bits and bytes will get to the car. Will a USB modem be required? Will Mini charge a monthly service fee? Maybe you’ll just need a really long Ethernet cable? We’ll find out when it gets a full unveiling at the Geneva Auto Show next month.
Mini Countryman to be first production car with internet streaming radio? originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 24 Feb 2010 11:29:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

That little memory chip serving tunes to your smartphone, the one that’s just a sneeze or twitch away from going where the socks go whenever you take it out, has a far more interesting history than you think. Andrew “Bunnie” Huang, co-creator of the Chumby, explored the surprisingly interesting underside of microSD production in China after being given a batch of questionable memory cards direct from Kingston itself. Huang’s conclusion is that the chips were created during a “ghost shift,” when a rogue employee runs the manufacturing lines after hours to produce authentic looking but decidedly sub-par memory chips using materials of inadequate quality. Huang bought numerous questionable examples on the gray market and watched as vendors took bogus cards and threw them into authentic retail packaging, complete with serial numbers and holograms. If you’re as fascinated by the world of KIRF as we are, it’s a very interesting read.

Rejoice, owners of netbooks with Intel GMA 500 graphics: Flash Player 10.1 Beta 3 is here, complete with hardware video acceleration for your machines. That should make Hulu and YouTube HD usable on machines like the Sony VAIO P and VAIO X, the Nokia Booklet 3G, and the previous-generation Dell Mini 10. The new build also bring support for the Broadcom Crystal HD accelerator found in Pine Trail Atom machines like the newest Dell Mini 10 and HP Mini 210 — support we found sorely lacking when we reviewed the Dell. We just tried it out on our review HP Mini 210 and it managed 720p YouTube just fine, although 1080p was a no-go — we’re waiting on some updated Broadcom drivers though, so don’t take that as gospel quite yet. We’ll have much more on that in our full Mini 210 review; for now you should all get downloading and let us know how it’s going in comments.

CES 2010: Two connected radios gets Las Vegas preview
Pure is previewing two new products at this year’s CES event as the Oasis Flow and Sirocco 550 get their public debut.
The Oasis Flow, a rival to Robert’s Terrain model, is a weatherproof and splash resistant rechargeable digital and internet radio with FM.
A follow on from the first-gen Oasis, this new model adds internet connectivity, touchscreen controls, enhanced audio, FM and a crystal clear OLED display which is readable at any angle.
Said to be “rugged, weatherproof and extremely durable thanks to a splash resistant case, cast aluminium framework and rubber seals”, the Oasis Flow is angled for use in the bathroom, garden or any outdoor setting.
The Sirocco 550 is the new flagship model of Pure’s micro hi-fi family offering digital and internet radio in micro hi-fi system with FM, CD and an iPod/iPhone dock.
Both will be available in the UK in the first half of 2010 but pricing is yet to be confirmed. We will keep you posted.

It’s is also similar to previous cameras in the range as it gets a 3.6x optical zoom, 12-megapixel sensor and 2.7-inch LCD to view your pics on, although in terms of aesthetics there are differences – with a more rounded appearance.

Available from March 2010 you’ll be able to snap it up for ?199.99.

Like the Chumby, I’m not totally sure that the Pure Sensia is meant as a clock radio. But I don’t know what the hell else you’d use it for, and it’d be pretty sweet to wake up to.
Pure mainly focuses on internet radio, releasing little docks and speaker sets and that kind of thing, but this is their first effort with a touchscreen and it definitely looks to best the Chumby One (though not the sorta similar iLuv App Station) in the specs department. It’s got a 5.7-inch capacitive glass touchscreen (the Chumby’s got a 3.5-inch resistive), a 30W sound system (Chumby’s only packing a paltry 2W) and offers weather, Facebook and Twitter apps, with “more to come.”
Now here’s the part where Chumby kicks the Sensia’s ass: The Sensia is far bigger, like dominate-your-bedside-table big; its design is, at best, inoffensive, while the Chumby is damned adorable; it’s got no homebrew community to hack away and make it a great gadget, let alone a huge repository of fun approved apps; and most importantly, it’s $350 to the Chumby’s $100. $350 is super expensive for a clock radio, or a bedside boombox or whatever you’d call this thing. Availability has yet to be announced. [Pure]

Pure’s always had a knack for crafting elegant, oftentimes unorthodox looking radios. Problem is (at least for you Yanks), they’ve been marketed and sold exclusively across the pond. In our humble opinion, there’s no better time to change that than here at the International Consumer Electronics Show, and sure enough, Pure is making itself known on the US radar with five distinct WiFi radios. Up first is the flagship product shown above (dubbed the Sensia), which boasts a 5.7-inch touchscreen, an oval enclosure and access to the Pure Lounge — a nifty little portal that taps into internet radio stations, Twitter and Facebook. You’ll also find an auxiliary input jack and a $349 price tag, which is only topped in this lineup by the $449 Sirocco 550. Said system is much like a mini boombox, complete with the typical WiFi radio capabilities, a USB socket, iPhone / iPod compatibility, a CD player and an SD expansion slot. Moving on, there’s the $139 Siesta Flow alarm clock radio, the $249 Oasis Flow — which just so happens to be both rugged and waterproof — and the $229 Evoke Flow that originally surfaced back in 2008. Details on actual US availability is expected to come later, though the full press releases can be found after the break right this very moment.

BBC and commercial radio teams up for 400-station internet radio portal
The BBC and commercial radio companies have unveiled the new online radio player we brought you news of recently, that “aims to offer the output of every licensed UK radio station and to let users search this content by subject, musical style, or even song title”.
The UK Radioplayer, due for launch early next year, is described as a pop-up console which will be open to stream more than 400 licensed national, local, community and student radio stations.
The BBC says it will offer “a unique, constantly-updated live and on-demand audio service” and users will be able to store their favourite stations on pre-set buttons.
Official terms for the project have now been signed by the BBC, RadioCentre, Global Radio and Guardian Media Group but the service will be made available to all Ofcom-licensed networks.
Initially due to be available through computers, the Beeb says later versions are planned for smartphones and other internet-connected devices. We will keep you posted.

It’s fair to say that Revo has never made a “normal” looking radio in its entire life, but hey — that’s a-okay with us. The outfit’s latest, which is up for pre-order right now at ?229.95 ($382), is easily one of the sleekest, most vintage-looking we’ve ever seen it produce. The aptly-named Heritage sports a wood and aluminum motif, room for your iPod or iPhone to dock, and support for DAB, FM and WiFi radio signals. There’s also an OLED display to keep you informed, support for wireless music streaming from your Mac or PC, a 3-inch neodymium speaker driver, 7-watts of power, a 3.5 millimeter headphone connector and even an iPod video output. Heck, they even throw in a multi-country power adapter as a courtesy to you yearnin’ Yanks. Go on and tap that via link if you’re interested in an unboxing.

The first Livio Radio hit the scene in April, and now the second one is splashing down in an attempt to draw the attention of those who considering themselves amongst the sophisticated. At first glance, we assumed that the curiously titled NPR Radio would tune into NPR broadcasts only, though our hopes of such a marvelously awesome and useless device were quickly dashed after perusing the press release. In reality, the internet radio functions just like any other web radio (via Ethernet or WiFi, mind you), though it does enable users to quickly store and access their favorite NPR stations with a convenient “my NPR” button on the front of the device. If you’re looking to bring a few more fireside chats into your cozy little den, this one can be snapped up today for a penny under $200.
