We’re not going to engage in too much wild speculation on this piece of information, but there are certainly a few raised eyebrows in Engadget-land right now. Apparently Plastic Logic is no longer offering pre-orders of its QUE proReader, as a tipster of ours discovered while trying to push through his order of the $799.99, 8GB / 3G version of the large-screen device. According to the order page “Pre-orders are sold out

There is a flaw in the logic offered by AT&T, Verizon et al regarding the early termination fees (ETFs) on cellphone contracts. The argument, as cNet reported Thursday, is that the ETF minimizes the initial cost of the phone. …

Discover Magazine has a great article on the real science and logic of the paradoxes of time travel. Just what is possible and what isn’t? Prepare to have your brain at least partially melted.

Sure, it doesn’t address anything pesky like parallel timelines, but it does talk about the impossibility of changing something that’s already happened.

The nub of the problem is that you cannot have a consistent “arrow of time” in the presence of closed timelike curves. The arrow of time is simply the distinction between the past and the future. We can turn an egg into an omelet, but not an omelet into an egg; we remember yesterday, but not tomorrow; we are born, grow older, and die, never the reverse. Scientists explain all of these manifestations of the arrow of time in terms of entropy-loosely, the “disorderliness” of a system. A neatly stacked collection of papers has a low entropy, while the same collection scattered across a desktop has a high entropy. The entropy of any system left to its own devices will either increase with time or stay constant; that is the celebrated second law of thermodynamics. The arrow of time comes down to the fact that entropy increases toward the future and was lower in the past.

But what the hell is that temple all about, science?! [Discover]

Our time this morning with the QUE proReader was all too short, so we took another pass at the device — this time armed to the teeth with our very best touchscreen gestures. We have to say, the more we play with it, the more we like it. The interface is very well thought out, the touchscreen keyboard is very responsive (though a little awkward to type on in landscape mode) and the general functionality is just about perfect for this sort of device. It’s not going to change the world, and the price means it’ll be only for a very select sort of user, but we have a sneaky feeling that those users are going to be pretty smug folks once this thing starts shipping. Check out the video after the break.

CES 2010: Big, connected and more than your average ebook reader
Plastic Logic Que proReader debuts. Gadgets, eBook readers, Plastic Logic, CES2010, plastic logic que proreader 0

Cambridge based company,?Plastic Logic, is hoping to shake up the ebook reader market with the launch of the QUE proReader at?CES?in Las Vegas.

The new device claims to be more than an “eReader” and promises to provide “a premium reading experience and access to content anywhere anytime, while simplifying the multi-faceted lifestyle of business professionals –and to literally lighten their workload,” according to the company.

The unit will feature an 8.5 x 11 inch form factor, 10.7-inch touchscreen shatterproof plastic display only dwarfed by the Skiff Reader announced earlier in the week.

In addition to being able to access newspapers, periodicals and eBooks, the QUE supports reading and annotating document formats business users need (including PDF, Microsoft Office, ePub documents and more).

The standard 4GB QUE model can hold up to 35,000 documents or the equivalent of up to 35 filing cabinets worth of documents, while the 8GB model holds up to 75,000 documents.

Like the Kindle users will be able to access content via Wi-Fi and AT&T’s 3G network.

Preorders for the QUE proReader are being taken at the QUE Store with the promise of a mid-April 2010 shipping date. The company has said that it won’t be available in Barnes and Noble stores until later this year.

However a big screen comes with a price to match. The QUE will range from $649.00 for the 4GB QUE model with WiFi that holds up to 35,000 documents, to $799.00 for the 8GB QUE model with WiFi and 3G that holds up to 75,000 documents.

CES 2010: New models in this year’s iPhone-controlled range listed
Sony reveals next-gen 3D-ready Blu-ray player

It’s not only Sony’s tellies that are getting Monolithic on your ass, but their new range of Blu-ray players too.

“The new 2010 Blu-ray Disc Players from Sony will redefine home entertainment in your living room, even before you switch them on”, says Sony’s PR machine.

The new Monolithic models include the 3D-ready BDP-S770 that, thanks to its Wi-Fi integration will offer easy access to catch-up services (with Five On Demand named for early 2010) as well as access to online vids via BRAVIA Internet Video.

With DLNA and USB connections the player also offers Gracenote metadata and searches via the Entertainment Database Browser and allows use of your iPhone or iPod touch as a BD Remote Control via a free app.

The BDP-S570 appears to offer all that the S770 does, but minus the 3D bit, while the BDP-S370 needs an adaptor to hook up to your Wi-Fi.

Sony is also due to offer entire Blu-ray home entertainment packages in 2010 with the BDV-E370, the BDV-E870, the BDV-E970W and the BDV-F700, with various speaker configurations, announced at CES.

We’ll bring you more info on each of the models as they see a retail release in the UK.

CES 2010: A choice of 15 – flash memory, HDD but all with plenty of kick
Sony launches two Handycams for each day of the week

Sony has littered the floor of CES 2010 with 15 Handycams for consumers to pick through. The enormous addition to the range consists of five HDD recording models and 10 which store footage onto internal flash memory and both SD and Sony Memory sticks as well.

The premium models are the CX550V, XR550V, CX350V, XR350V and CX305 – all of which hold the top end G-glass Sony lens for wide-angle, high quality shooting with around twice the field of view of previousHandycams . They also feature Sony’s incredibly successful 3-way stabilisation technology we’ve seen in previous models and it’s also present on the more mid-range of the remaining 10Handycams too.

Each has quicker AF than ever before, plus intelligent auto modes and higher bit-rate recording up to 24Mbps. All the work is taken care of by the Exmor R CMOS sensor and BIONZ processor as used in all high end Sony imaging products. There’s tracking face recognition, stills shooting at up to 12-megapixel resolution and even a Golf Shot mode which will analyse you swing in slow motion to the point where you’re more confused than ever while trying to just play.

Optical zoom is anywhere between 10x and 25x depending on your choice and, if you wish, you can also purchase an additional lens for up to 60x without having to go digital. What Sony seems to be saying with the announcement is that it’s your call. Whatever combination you’re after, the company now stocks – whether that’s with a 240GBHDD or just a little flash. All models will be out this Spring.
