Introduced back in February the Olympus µTOUGH-8010 is the maker latest waterproof and shockproof point and shoot. Capable to resist drop up to 2m, temperatures below 10°C and to resist to surface pressures up to 100kg… Anyway there is no better way to figure out if the manufacturer claim on such things is truth or not that smashing your camera on the ground, and that’s exactly what Olympus did at CP+ 2010.

Olympus

Already introduced during the last PMA in the US, the Japanese manufacturer Olympus decided to give to the Japanese press the pleasure to discover in flesh their latest model during a nicely well organized event here in Tokyo.

Nothing we already covered of course but if was still interesting to play with the new cameras as well as discovering their accessories. But, the most “impressive” element of this press event was the 3 µTOUGH cameras frozen into a big block of ice… Funny and impressive

Christ, this is getting complicated. Mirrorless cameras with interchangeable lenses that promise near-DSLR quality without DSLR bulk are verifiably exploding. After the now-established Micro Four Thirds format from Panasonic and Olympus, Samsung jumped in with its Hybrid NX camera. Yesterday, Sony revealed its own spin, the Alpha concept.

And now, there’s Sigma, known for its prickly but highly capable compacts powered by its oversized Foveon image sensors, is going to make their own system with Foveon. More interesting, maybe, is that they’re thinking about making lenses for the other guys too. Oh well, who really wants simplicity? [DP Review]
