Hello Rewind is a company with two missions: to help recycle your old Mötley Crüe t-shirt into a kickass laptop sleeve, and to hire former sex trafficking victims to do it.
The process on your end is totally straightforward. Just buy a 13″ or 15″ laptop sleeve from Hello Rewind, and they’ll send you a pre-paid envelope. Mail them back the shirt of your choice, and 4-8 weeks later your hilarious ironic garment will have magically transformed into a hilarious ironic laptop sleeve.
Well, okay, not magically. That process is more complicated. From Hello Rewind’s website:
We want to show sex trafficking survivors that rescue is not the end and that there is hope for something better in their lives. We train and teach them in fundamental skills — sewing, English, business skills. Many of the laptop sleeves made through Hello Rewind are hand-crafted by sex trafficking survivors, and we hope that they become an integral part of our business operations. After supporting the sex trafficking suvivors involved with Hello Rewind, the remaining profits are recycled back into the company so that we can grow the business to support even more women.
So not only is it a great concept (I’ve already got eyes on a certain Wrestlemania III t-shirt that would be much better suited to protecting my Macbook Pro), it’s helping people lead better lives. Win. [Hello Rewind via Fashionably Geek]
It’s rough for robots in the armed services lately. Lack of funding is forcing the United States military to end the Army’s Future Combat Systems program and eliminate many robotic soldiers, including autonomous helicopters and mine-sniffing transport vehicles.
The good news is that some of the remaining funds are being used to upgrade existing programs in an attempt to integrate the technology “in a fiscally responsible manner.” I say we just plain need to start working on a way to call some Autobots in for help. [The Hill via Wired via PopSci]
CES 2010: A choice of 15 – flash memory, HDD but all with plenty of kick
Sony has littered the floor of CES 2010 with 15 Handycams for consumers to pick through. The enormous addition to the range consists of five HDD recording models and 10 which store footage onto internal flash memory and both SD and Sony Memory sticks as well.
The premium models are the CX550V, XR550V, CX350V, XR350V and CX305 – all of which hold the top end G-glass Sony lens for wide-angle, high quality shooting with around twice the field of view of previousHandycams . They also feature Sony’s incredibly successful 3-way stabilisation technology we’ve seen in previous models and it’s also present on the more mid-range of the remaining 10Handycams too.
Each has quicker AF than ever before, plus intelligent auto modes and higher bit-rate recording up to 24Mbps. All the work is taken care of by the Exmor R CMOS sensor and BIONZ processor as used in all high end Sony imaging products. There’s tracking face recognition, stills shooting at up to 12-megapixel resolution and even a Golf Shot mode which will analyse you swing in slow motion to the point where you’re more confused than ever while trying to just play.
Optical zoom is anywhere between 10x and 25x depending on your choice and, if you wish, you can also purchase an additional lens for up to 60x without having to go digital. What Sony seems to be saying with the announcement is that it’s your call. Whatever combination you’re after, the company now stocks – whether that’s with a 240GBHDD or just a little flash. All models will be out this Spring.

When the first generation Zune 30 was released November 14th, 2006 there two limited run Zune colors: Magenta Pink and Day-glow Orange. Each of these colors were limited to 500 made. Many of these went out as a gift to the members of the Zune team. From what I understand the Pink was for the US and the Orange was for Europe(Actually Jessica, just pinged me and told me that they were both US and the Zune Team got to choose which color they wanted). After gifting these Zunes the remaining were randomly inserted into retail channels.
I picked up the Pink Zune when it was first released back in 2006 from eBay- the Orange Zune I just picked up from @chrisleckness nearly completing the ship gift Zune. I think the only one that remains is the Zune 16 Citron- a yellow Zune that popped up when the first flash Zunes were released. The only person I know who has one is Co-host of ZuneInsider Podcast, Matt Akers and he refuses to sell. Anyone up for a covert mission to infiltrate his office at Zune headquarters? In the meantime, enjoy the photo shoot of these two limited edition Zunes.
It’s blurrier than old MySpace snapshots, but it’s there as expected. The Apollo Lunar Modules and the US flag left behind at the Apollo 17 landing site has been caught in a close-up image by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter.
The lander as well as the flag, or rather the remaining flag pole, seen in the image above are exactly where they should be based on this shot by the Ascent Module “right after Apollo 17 lifted off the Moon”:

Gmail users were reminded of the vulnerability of relying on webmail services on Tuesday night, as Google’s popular email website went down for about 100 minutes.
Google being Google, it knows that user rage is best quelled by providing as much information as possible about what went wrong, so it’s written a tell-all blog post about the problem. The whole thing stemmed from an underestimation of the load on servers.
The company’s engineers took a few servers offline to perform routine upgrades. Normally, if a server is down then the rest of the system takes up the slack, but traffic was higher than they realized. As a result, a few of the company’s routers became overloaded and unavailable.
That increased load on the remaining routers, which became overloaded too and within a few minutes Gmail’s web interface become unvailable. Google says that IMAP/POP access and mail processing continued to work normally because these requests don’t use the same routers.
The team brought a bunch of extra request routers online, and distributed the load across them instead, and the site slowly croaked back into life. Google says that it’s taking a number of steps to prevent such an event happening again, including extra headroom and improving the behaviour of overloaded routers.
Gmail currently manages 99.9% uptime, says Google, and promises that it’s “committed to keeping events like today’s notable for their rarity”.
This is another one of those “must have” gadgets for which the cool-factor far outweighs the usefulness factor. The Logitech Professional Presenter R800 is a wireless remote control for running PowerPoint presentations. The remote has various timer and vibrate settings and an LCD display so that you can pace your presentation and monitor your remaining time. With a maximum range of 100ft you can roam the room and interact with your audience all you want with much fear of losing control of your slides. In addition, the remote displays signal strength of the connection to the USB wireless transmitter so you’ll know when you are about to go out of range.
The R800 is also packing a high visibility green laser pointer. Green lasers are a huge improvement for laser pointer as the beam is much more visible especially useful where you can’t dim the lights. All this is run on 2 AAA batteries so you don’t have to fuss with rechargeables unless you want to. You’ll have to justify $99 for this super weapon. N.B. Warranty void if surgically attached to sharks. Permanent Link
