A Canadian company that specializes in body armor for various purposes has designed gone into the dog business now. Well not exactly. What I mean is that they’ve started to design armor for our canine friends out in the field as well and it’s about time to.

We’ve been led to believe in the past that there’d be a GSM version of Motorola’s mighty Sholes for markets outside the US, but this particular version that passed the FCC this week — ID IHDP56KC5, if you must know — has us particularly interested. Why? Well, it’s packing WCDMA on the 850 and 1900MHz bands, which means it’d work on AT&T, Rogers, and HSPA newcomers Bell and Telus. We’ve been led to believe, though, that this particular device is destined for Latin America where 850 / 1900 is also used in favor of the 2100MHz spectrum more prevalent in Europe. That doesn’t rule out Canada, but our instincts tell us that Verizon has every intention of locking up the Sholes as a US exclusive, which means AT&T is a likely no-go — the carrier’s been strangely silent on Android, anyhow, and we haven’t heard a peep of recent intel suggesting they’re prepping Google-powered gear in time for the holidays. Of course, enterprising individuals will probably figure out how to unlock and import this bad boy, so if you’re an American and the thought of switching to Big Red for a Droid makes you physically ill, take heart that there might yet be hope.

Lighters are more often than not outside the scope of our coverage here at Engadget, and while we don’t condone smoking or lighting anything on fire… well, these are just awesome. Banpresto’s launched a pre-order of these two beautiful Zippo-style lighters, a Sega Mega Drive and a Sega Saturn which runs through November 6th, with a shipping date sometime in December. Each lighter runs ?10,500 (around $115). We’ll definitely keep our eyes peeled for more of these smokers.

Call us crazy, but we’re guessing one Gero Miesenb?ck of the University of Oxford has been watching just a wee bit too much Fringe. Gero here, along with a few of his over-anxious colleagues, has seemingly figured out a way to actually write memories onto a fruit fly’s brain using only a laser pen and three-fourths of a Ouija board. We know what you’re thinking, and we’re thinking the same. But all terrifying thoughts aside, what if boffins could burn memories of hard lessons learned into our minds without us having to suffer through them first? You know, like upgrading to Snow Leopard.

Nokia’s 5230 isn’t apt to blow any minds with the likes of the HD2, Droid and XPERIA X3 on the horizon, but for those perfectly content with a touchscreen-based Symbian S60 5th Edition handset, this one sure looks purty. After dipping its toes in the FCC’s expansive database just last month, a crop of new in the wild shots have surfaced to show off its 3.2-inch display (640 x 360), 2 megapixel camera, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR module and variety of colorful backs. Hit the read link for more pixels if you’re so inclined, and feel free to take the “January 2010″ release date in with a dose of NaCl.

Assuming it’s real, this teaser video confirms a few things about the Moto Droid: that Droid is indeed the name, and that it will run Android 2.0. Not much to see here, but apparently there’s “more coming soon.” [BGR]

We know that Apple is aware of the data-annihilating Guest Account bug in Snow Leopard, and it looks like a fix is on the way. The latest 10.6.2 beta seeded to developers specifically addresses the issue, and throws in a few other tweaks for good measure. If you’re staring at that Guest Account on the login screen with fear and loathing, sit tight. Hopefully this will all be resolved soon. [9to5 Mac]
