With MWC right around the corner, all eyes are on Microsoft for the launch of Windows Phone 7. And though we heard Project Pink was in trouble, this FCC filing suggests the Sharp-made Turtle may still be on its way.
The diagram for the model PB10ZU shows a short, stout device that bears an unmistakable resemblance to the Project Pink Turtle images we saw last Fall. The filing reveals that the PB10ZU packs dual-band CDMA, EVDO, Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity. Sharp being the manufacturer for the Turtle is in line with what we have heard from the beginning and makes sense, as they made the original Sidekick for Danger, who was acquired by Microsoft in 2008.
A second device with the model number PB20ZU is mentioned, though considerably less detail is offered. One could surmise that this might well be the Pure, the second, more traditionally-shaped slider that we saw in our original leak.
As Engadget points out, the FCC filing’s details are being withheld until March 29, just after the CTIA conference in Vegas. That conference has been rumored as a potential venue for the debut of the Zune phone. Exactly what place the Turtle will have in the Windows Phone 7 line-up remains unclear, though it has been suggested that it is not the star of the collection but rather an “evolution of the Sidekick.”
Presumably some of this will come into focus in the coming days at MWC, but until then you can bet the speculation will be at an all time high. [FCC via Engadget]

Oops. Those two pics looks similar, eh? And if we’re not mistaken, Microsoft’s Pink phone is rumored to be made by Sharp. This wirerame for model PB10ZU just hit the FCC looking every bit the “Turtle” device that was leaked last year. Of course, seeing Sharp behind Pink is only natural since it was one of Danger’s manufacturers of choice for the Sidekick — a team wholly ingested by Microsoft a few years ago. Looking through the FCC docs we see that it’s a slider with dual-band CDMA, EVDO Rev. A, Bluetooth, and 802.11b/g WiFi. We also see reference to a second model, the PB20ZU (aka, “pure“?), although that model is lacking any detail whatsoever. The tastiest of FCC docs are being withheld by request until March 29th — right in line with a rumored spring launch. Hopefully Microsoft will have more to say about Project Pink and Windows 7 devices here in Barcelona so stay tuned.
[Thanks, Jeremy F.]

If this Crowbot, which can attract and repel crows by playing different recordings, isn’t quite weird enough for you, wait until you hear about Crowbot Jenny, the elusive superhero babe who uses it to command her crow army.
What do you get when the worlds of superheroes, manga, technology and crows collide? Crowbot Jenny and her Crowbot, a character and project conceived by Hiromi Ozaki to explore animals and our interactions with them.
To do so, Ozaki consulted two leading crow experts at the University of Cambridge and came up with the Crowbot, a device that can communicate with the birds via a variety of crow calls. That would be enough, you’d think, but Ozaki thought the Crowbot needed a shoulder to perch upon. Enter Crowbot Jenny, “a reclusive girl who prefers to spend time surrounded by technology and animals rather than with humans.” Right.

When she’s not off doing bizarro superhero stuff, Crowbot Jenny is helping out with bird-related research at University of Cambridge.
OK, so its not exactly a crow army she’s dealing with quite yet. But it’s nice to see some imagination going into this research and the technology that’s behind it. [We Make Money Not Art via Bot Junkie]

We pretty much knew that Windows Mobile 7 is coming next week at MWC, but the Wall Street Journal has a piece up confirming the announcement, along with a few other interesting details. As we’d heard, the new UI is a riff on the Zune HD interface, and the OS “reflects a much tighter focus” on hardware / software integration, all based around a “small number” of hardware chassis specs — pretty much what we’ve known, but it’s interesting that the Journal’s source says the plan is to “limit the wild variation” that’s typically been the hallmark of Windows Mobile. The WSJ also says that the long-rumored Pink project is a separate phone designed to replace the Sidekick — which we also basically knew — but that it won’t make an appearance at MWC at all. Hmm, sounds like someone ought tell all those Twittering Danger employees. We’ll see what happens — it all goes down early on Monday.

That Microsoft / T-Mobile tag team has been doing a pretty decent job of cleaning up the disaster area left by the Sidekick data loss, and now the first item on the recovery menu is ready for collection. Sidekick users can hit up the My T-Mobile webpage to download their contacts and then restore them either to their Sidekick or whatever device they’ve replaced it with. Extensive how-to instructions are available at the read link, which also furnishes us with the reassurance that “Microsoft/Danger continues its efforts to recover pictures, calendar entries and to-do lists, which may be available in the future.”

Sidekick users tend to be an active, fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants bunch, so it’s gotta hurt like the dickens when they don’t have access to their schedules and little black books — but hey, at least it’s still recoverable, right? Microsoft has just posted a quick update to keep everyone abreast on the progress of its Sidekick data recovery, and it sounds like they’ll be able to have remaining missing contacts back in action this week with the rest of the data — to-dos, notes, photos, and the like — following on “shortly thereafter.” Anyone who didn’t lose information in the debacle should be unaffected by the recovery process, but for those who did, these backup tapes couldn’t possibly load into Danger’s feisty data center fast enough.

In case you missed it, Sony’s got a thing for 3D with big plans to push the technology into your living room next year. While the first application will be applied to the flat screen TV, Sony’s obviously thinking about other displays judging by this tiny prototype set for reveal at Tokyo’s Digital Content EXP0 2009 on Thursday. The 13 x 27-cm device packs a stereoscopic, 24-bit color image measuring just 96 ? 128 pixels viewable at 360-degrees without special glasses. If the prototype ever hits the assembly line then Sony envisions its commercial use in digital signage or medical imaging — or as a 3D photo frame, television, house for your virtual pet, or visualizer to assist with web shopping in the home. We’ll be on-hand for the unveil on Thursday with live coverage and hands-on, check back then for more.
