The fact that developers have designed Bar Code reader apps for mobile handsets that enable us users to get quite a bit of useful information about products is great to begin with. Of course things have progressed quite a bit since then, from bar codes, to this Microsoft Tag. The software giant is revolutionizing the way we read information off of magazines, newspapers and such other literature

Get all the information you need without leaving Google
Google takes on Wolfram Alpha, remove need to visit any factual site again. Software, Online, Google, Wolfram Alpha, Search engines 0

Google?has made a move to take on?Wolfram Alpha?and save you the need of visiting websites providing factual information with a move that could have a dramatic affect on how we use the world’s number one search engine.

Launching a new feature that Google is calling “Answer highlighting” the new offering will “automatically identify and extract structured data from across the Internet” and deliver it to Google users within the company’s own search results saving you the need to click on the suggested link.

“We’ve been making progress, and today the research behind Google Squared is, for the first time, making search better for everyone with a new feature called answer highlighting,” the company said in a blog post.

The new feature will let users get to information more quickly by seeking out and bolding the likely answer to questions asked in search results.

However SEO experts told Pocket-lint that they were worried that the move could cause users not to bother clicking on the link and therefore visiting the site providing the information in the first place:”If you’ve got the information from Google, why would you click on the link to read it again,” one SEO expert told us.

“Maybe the newspaper owners were right. If Google provides you the information on its search page you aren’t going to click through to the original article,” said another before adding “and not visiting the site could mean a drastic drop in visitors and therefore ad revenue.”

Google has been criticized in the past by newspaper owners like Rupert Murdoch for using headlines and snippets of the news stories when displaying links to the news.

Google has always said in its defense though that it is merely surfacing links that in turn helps drive traffic to news sites.

What do you think? Will Google’s move to answer your questions without you having to click through to the original source cause outcry from publishers, or is it Google just doing all it can to help those searching?

Comment: New Fiat publicity stunt quite literally like watching paint dry…
Man to paint car pink with nail varnish live on web

You might well ask why, as indeed I am, but a Welshman is attempting to paint a Fiat 500 pink, live online, using tiny pots of nail varnish to try and get a Guinness World Record, as well, of course, as gaining some publicity for Fiat’s new, limited edition, rose-tinted motor.

If you are interested in such shenanigans then you can follow the progress of the publicity stunt live online via a webcam at the PinkMyRide site or can stay up-to-date with happenings (which I can’t imagine will be that scintillating) via Twitter by following @500Pink, where 55 people are currently doing just that.

I could be wrong and this could be the next huge trending topic on Twitter, but in my opinion this is not how to use Twitter to engage your potential audience – it’s a pointless stunt that just happens to use the micro-blogging service as a means of communicating, rather than consider the wider benefits Twitter can offer a brand or a promotion.

What’s worse is that to try and appeal to a female audience (as indeed the car’s colour might suggest is the target market) Fiat has created a history for the record breaker, trying to make the 28-year-old more attractive to women, who they presumably hope will then tune into the live stream to watch the bloke carrying out his pointless task whilst in corporate captivity.

From the press release: “The wannabe record breaker, who is recently single, said: ‘I broke up with my girlfriend and thought this would be a great way to get through it [Er, really? Why?]. I hope to nail the job in seven days but I’ve never done anything like this before”.

To up the stakes on that side of things, a recent tweet (referring to a concurrently running comp offering “15 minutes of fame helping the hunk pink the Fiat 500″) from afore-mentioned hunk reads like some awful lonely hearts come-on: “If you want to come and join me paint – go to pinkmyride.tv and enter the competition – come on its lonely in here”.

Remember the $1000 “I Am Rich” iPhone application? Well, here is another $1000 app that actually does something. If you are an aspiring lawyer, it might actually be a bargain.

How could a $1000 iPhone app be a bargain you ask? Well, BarMax CA was designed by Harvard lawyers, and it’s designed to help law students pass the bar exam—so you know the information comes from a credible source . Plus, BarBri, a company that is well known in the industry for offering in-class test prep combined with a free iPhone app, typically charges between $3000 and $4000 for enrollment (they have also been involved in multiple class action lawsuits regarding monopolistic business practices).

The app is huge at 1GB—offering audio lectures, practice tests, flash cards and more—in short, everything you would need from a 2-month course. Obviously, the current offering is meant for the California bar, but there are plans to roll out versions for New York and five other popular states by the end of the year. There will also be a $500 version that features only multiple choice preparation. [iTunes and Barmax via TechCrunch]

Maybe it’s because I spent countless days glued to these things when I was a kid, but I must get Takara Tomy’s new solar-powered, officially licensed Nintendo Game & Watch keychains. And their price is a tiny as their size.

Only $11. [Gigazine via Crunchgear]

Steve Ballmer mentioned Windows Mobile in his keynote address at CES last week. Sure, that mention was the fantastically brilliant HTC HD2 and it’s arrival into the USA, but…. that was it. The tech world logically assumed that the “big” Windows Mobile 7 announcement would be at the Mobile World Congress but now rumours are circulating that 6.5.3 will be announced instead and today betanews has been asked to clarify a report which assumed that 7 would be announced at MWC. The article states..

“Based on the information we received today, it is clear that Microsoft is not comfortable with Betanews — or anyone else — referring to the subject of next month’s discussion as Windows Mobile 7.”

The internet is always a good place to find rumours, and sorting fact from fiction is becoming a little difficult at the moment, but we’re becoming a little worried. Yes, the HD2 is fantastic. Yes, HTC TouchFLO / Sense is magnificent but Microsoft need to do something. When reviewers are looking at the HD2 and stating that it “thankfully hides the ugly 6.5 OS” and when Android is developing at such a fast pace, Microsoft need to urgently stop the rot.

It may seem totally absurd at first but then these cool fabrics, designed by MIT student, Adam Whiton are likely to reduce crimes against women, or anyone for that matter. The fabric reacts to impacts suffered by means of blows and can store the information of the same on any computer. Now there are some questions that totally baffle me.

This bit of Blu-Ray news was left suspiciously out of Sony’s CES keynotes and big reveals, which doesn’t bode well…but anyway. Now it’s out: The BD Live feature MovieIQ Sync debuted with Michael Jackson’s This Is It. Woo?

Now, what does this feature do, exactly? Well here’s a refresher…it lets you view supplementary materials on your PC or iPhone while you watch the movie, without any of it appearing on the TV screen. The “sync” part means the information presented on your monitor or iPhone is synced up appropriately with the movie.

The disc also has a feature that allows owners to create and share custom playlists using songs from the movie. Again, not a lot of fanfare about this. Could it be that most people don’t really mess around with all this extra crap on their discs, and just, you know, want to watch the movie? [BigPictureBigSound via Engadget]

Location software launched for Android and iPhone
Google

Google seems to be launching software and services at a rate of knots these days and Near Me Now is the latest of a recent run of a location-based persuasion.

The option, which is sadly only available in the States right now, is designed to give the smartphones user instant access to the information in one’s immediate environment and just with the push of a single button.

Quite simply, all you do is open up the Near Me Now menu, tap “Explore Right Here” on your display and the Google servers will tell you all about the restaurants, bars, coffee shops, ATMs and whatever else you need in your immediate vicinity. From there you can also get reviews and any other info you might need.

Near Me Now works with iPhone OS 3.0 devices and Android 2.0.01 enabled handsets too. Like all good services, expect it to roll out to other countries around the time we’re coveting the next tasty bit of tech that’s only available to our cousins across the way.
