Also adds sharing on Twitter
Spotify makes more cash for Universal than iTunes 0

Universal Music Sweden has admitted that Spotify makes it more money than iTunes does. “In five months from the launch, Spotify became our largest digital source of income and so passed by iTunes”, said Per Sundin, managing director of Universal Music.

“It’s a fantastic development, explained by the fact that Spotify really has exploded”, he added. The admission brings with it a whole host of questions – none of which we have many answers to. How much is Spotify paying the labels? Could this be why the iPhone app still hasn’t been approved? Does this validate ad-funded music as a business model?

Other streaming music services have been forced to cut back coverage due to the egregious royalty rates charged for music streaming by the major labels and publishers. However – since it was revealed that the labels are shareholders in Spotify, many have asked if they’re being given preferential rates.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday Spotify rolled out a tiny update to its streaming client that allows you to share songs via Twitter. However, unfortunately they’re shared as a full HTTP link, rather than as a shortened URL.

If the functionality isn’t live for you, then close and re-open the application and it should update to version 0.3.19.

Get the official low-down
VIDEO: Orange explains Monkey 0

Orange has let “Connor” out of his box again to showcase its new “proposition for the youth audience”, Monkey. As some of you may know, the Monkey tariff is a way for UK yoofs to dial in to set the number of Universal Music artist’s song via pre-set, 4Music-generated playlists. Hit play on the video now to get the director-level corporate low-down, or skip to 2:11 in for a brief hands-on of the service live, complete with a suitable yoof-full sounding automated voice system.

New budget RIM phone offered handset-only
SIM-free BlackBerry Curve 8520 on pre-order for £239.95 0

A budget BlackBerry, the 8520 gets all the push email and messaging features you’d expect from the brand, as well as a media player, mobile web access, Wi-Fi and a 2-megapixel camera.

In addition, the Curve 8520 is the first BlackBerry to feature an “innovative” touch-sensitive trackpad, like a mini version of such interfaces on laptops.

MobileFun is currently pushing pre-order sales for the Curve 8520, offering the new handset for 239.95, which appears to undercut the competition by about a tenner.

However, The Carphone Warehouse has said it will be offering the phone in “violet” for 199.95 on Pay As You Go basis – but tied into Orange.

Access to 16 playlists from Universal Music’s catalogue
Orange launches

Orange has unveiled “Monkey”, describing it as the first pay as you go package for the UK market that offers free music to customers when they top up their mobile.

Slightly convoluted – and with limited content – the scheme, that will arguably not be so attractive if the likes of Spotify get round to releasing a mobile app, sees Orange Monkey customers getting free access to streamed playlist-based music from the Universal Music label if they top up their phone a minimum of 10 per month.

Dialing 247 on handsets gets customers access to eight pre-set genre-based playlists via the phone call so no media player required, in addition, customers can set up eight of their own playlists via the online music player that can then be shared.

Aimed at the 16 to 14 “youth” market, Monkey also offers free texts, the ability for playlists to be shared on social networks and access to competitions and artist interviews.

Channel 4’s 4Music is getting involved with promoting the new package with the 4Music team also due to be the “editorial voice” of the official Monkey website and setting the playlist content.

There will be more info at www.orange.co.uk/monkey from 30 July.
