imageWith their A656 series of LCD TV’s Samsung have managed to create a range of products which have quickly established themselves as style icons. The surprising element of this phenomenon is that the new screens were not developed with the input of an Italian design studio or a bright in-house designer. In fact all the superlatives surrounding the design of these screens are the result of a new manufacturing process.

Samsung employ a technique to produce screens which retain their trademark black gloss ‘look’ while adding a ‘Crystallized’ Rose-Red finish which gives the 6 series a subtle hint of deep red which gets deeper towards the edges of the screen.

Scoring another industry first Samsung have become the first flat panel manufacturer to dispense with the use of either glue or screws in the manufacturing process. The result is a flat panel which looks like it has been hewn from a solid block.

While rival manufacturers are still scrabbling around in a desperate attempt to catch up with the outstanding design prowess of Samsung’s previous LCD range, the Korean brand has moved the goalposts again with its new ‘touch of colour’ models.

The injection of an undertone of red into the LE32A656’s glass-fronted bezel is a touch of elegant genius that makes the set look as gorgeous as it is distinctive.

Samsung provides ample connectivity options on the LE32A656 HDTV. There are no less than four HDMI inputs (three of which can be found on the back), as well as two SCART terminals for backwards compatibility. One of these is RGB capable, whilst the other is capable of Composite video only and should be avoided. There’s the obligatory Component video input (only one, but this is becoming less of a problem), a VGA PC input, and on the side, a shared block of S-Video, Composite Video and Stereo Audio jacks, handy if you have a standard definition camcorder, for instance.

Be careful though – Samsung’s 6 Series "black rose" design isn’t for everyone. Injected into the screen’s primarily gloss black plastic surround is a heady red tint, which lends it an unusual glow. It’s hard to say what interior design it would gel with, but at least it’s a step forward from the usual black box.
Not that the LE32A656 is just about "the look". Inside its rosy bezel is the essential tech, including Full HD 1920 x 1080 resolution. While it’s true that very few people have 1080p high-def sources, and even fewer will notice the benefit at this small size, it’s still important: the days of the HD-ready TV are numbered and within a few years almost all high-def content will be in 1080p.

The LE32A6556’s picture is also striking during, for instance, the sun-drenched scenes in the Bahamas, thanks to both the sheer brightness of its pictures and the impressive vibrancy of its colours. What’s more, as with all the best LCD TVs this impressive colour saturation doesn’t come at the expense of tonal accuracy, as everything from the tricky skin tones on show in the various casino sequences to the rich blues of the Bahamian skies and stunning red of Vesper Lynd’s dress looks entirely credible rather than overcooked or ‘PC-like’.

Yet more good news concerns the LE32A656’s handling of standard definition, with Samsung’s latest processing engines doing a much better job of converting standard def stuff to the screen’s full HD resolution than we saw on its previous LCD range.
