Toshiba’s SD-P1900 is a mid-range portable DVD player. It lacks the resolution and video quality of high-end models, but comes at a reasonable price and delivers a solid functionality, without any major flaws. Video quality is satisfactory, although the inbuilt speakers are slightly disappointing. Nevertheless, the P1900 is generally quite serviceable, and while it’s not the highest quality portable DVD player available, it’s a suitable mid-range unit.

One other neat feature is the audio video input and output that allows the Toshiba SDP 1900 to be connected to an external television or monitor or to be used as a display device for a camcorder or digital camera. The Toshiba SDP1900 will work with the following types of media: CD audio; CD-DA ; CD-R ; CD-RW ; SVCD; Video CD ; DivX version 6 ; DVD-R ; DVD-RW ; DVD Video ; DVD+R; DVD+RW; JPEG Viewer; and MP3.

The SDP1900’s bright 9″ widescreen TFT LCD display (480 x 234) is perfect for viewing standard, letterbox, and anamorphic DVD movies. This little unit not only plays DVDs, it’s also compatible with DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD VR, CD, CD-R and CD-RW and it plays MP3 and WMA files burned to CD-R/RW media, too. Not bad for a DVD player that’s around three pounds. 14-Bit/108mHz video digital-to-analog conversion provides maximum color purity, detail and resolution, and 24-Bit/192kHz PCM audio compatibility delivers warmer, more natural-sounding audio from many types of discs.

Flip open the lid and you’ll find all the main playback and menu controls and a flip-up disc tray. The screen is a 9in, 16:9 affair and sports a resolution of 480 x 234 pixels - well below the resolution of PAL DVDs. Contrast ratio is given at 150:1 with a claimed 110º viewing angle, which should prove handy when there are two kids in the back of the car.
Connections include two headphone sockets, an electrical digital audio output for Dolby Digital/DTS bitstream and PCM signals, plus combined composite video/stereo audio minijack output and input.

The rechargeable battery promises up to five hours of continuous playing time, depending on the brightness and volume levels selected. While this might be optimistic for most settings, the SD-P1900 should deliver at least 3.5 hours–enough to enjoy a movie or two. This portable player also includes AC and car adapters so you can keep the entertainment rolling just about anywhere. Utilizing the unit’s A/V outputs you’ll also be able to hook this portable DVD player up to a TV at home or in a hotel room. You’ll need to keep an eye on the remote though as you’ll need this to access a number of the unit’s menu and set up functions.
