Released for the rest of the world as HTC Advantage, with its name the communicator clearly gives everyone to understand that it packs great functionality and other technical innovations under the hood. Ultimately, the device is featured under HTC Advantage or HTC X7500 titles today. Or they use both. We will risk supposing that the numeric index is here to stay for sure, and as for Athena and Advantage, today the communicator is more likely to be known under the latter name. The numeric index steps into the shade, used for identifying the platform.

It could be the excitement of new technology - or perhaps the price associated with it - but there’s usually an aura of anticipation surrounding that moment when you pry open the packaging to your brand spanking new Windows Mobile device. The opening of the Advantage is no exception, and if anything HTC has perhaps either unconsciously or deliberately enhanced this experience. Unpacking the Advantage is like unwrapping presents at xmas time; there’s goodies to be found under every lid and in every pocket crammed into this small cubed package.

The screen is glorious…absolutely fabulous. 5″ of diagonal goodness that is clearer, and easier to read from, than any other available Windows Mobile Device. If a lot of screen isn’t important to you because you aren’t reading eBooks, editing documents or entering data in a spreadsheet, then you will most likely be turned off by the overall size of the device.

Moving on its spec continues with the introduction of a 20 Channel GPS receiver which is integrated within the unit, it took around 45seconds to pick up our position outside and this was helped further by the inclusion of a Quickfix GPRS utility which can speed up the process. Again the extra screen size does help with viewing directions and on the whole it does the job - there is also TomTom NAVIGATOR 6 software (Taster - 1 map) included to get you started.

The device features Audio Manager and Windows Media Player 10 which is compatible with AMR, AAC, WAV, WMA and MP3 files. HTC Advantage also integrates a TV-out which lets you output screen contents to an external viewing device. The sound doesn’t differ too much compared to the rest of HTC’s devices. It’s rather dull with no bass at all and barely a tint of highs. Even using better headphones and the included equalizer won’t improve the experience, but people that are not so fond of sounds can use the device as MP3 player in case of necessity. Still, you can easily watch a movie on the device as the dual external speakers are making a lot of “noise”. Even at higher volumes, the external sound kept clear and no distortions were detected.
